Why is Bea afraid of rejection in the novel, One to Watch?

Bea spends much of the novel terrified of rejection because Ray slept with her while engaged to someone else. He then left without telling her and ignored all of her messages. Ray is thus the cause of Bea’s deep-rooted insecurities that she must learn to overcome.
