What does the Statue of Liberty represent in the novel, One of Ours?

The Statue of Liberty symbolizes the purpose of Claude and the other American soldiers going to war. As Claude and his company sails out, they "make vows" to the "bronze image in the sea" or the Statue of Liberty (123). Thus, as many of the soldiers look at their country for the last time, they promise themselves to the ideal of liberty, which imbues their sacrifice with purpose. In this way, the statue of liberty comes to symbolize the ideals which Americans in World War I fought for.
