How does the author use foreshadowing in One True Thing?

One of the handouts Teresa brings for Ellen is the Patients' Bill of Rights, which lists the rights of a dying patient. This pamphlet foreshadows Kate's suicide (morphine overdose) and gives a voice to her desires as a patient without having to express them through direct dialogue.
