What is The Su Special?

The Su Specual, a sandwich that Jane invented during her employment at Pancake Billy’s in the 1970s, symbolizes the lasting impacts of Jane’s life in the past on twenty first century culture. In the same manner that the Su Special helps the diner staff recover from hangovers in the narrative present, Jane’s involvement in the early LGBTQ rights movement facilitates the presence of an open queer community in present-day New York. While Jane is physically trapped on the train, her work to increase queer visibility and overturn homophobic laws was not halted in time. She, and the people who fought for gay rights alongside her, laid the foundation for twenty first century queer culture.
