Ponsot makes wide use of symbolic language to portray feelings and emotions. The most obvious example in Ponsot's poem is the use of the heart, which symbolizes the speaker's emotions, from love to rage or anger. Although emotions are really reflective of chemical changes throughout the whole body, the heart centralizes them. By using symbolic language, Ponsot is able to take abstract and intangible elements and create more solid images that make her message easier to understand.
