How does Mama change over the course of the story in the novel, One-Eyed Cat?

When Mama is stricken with rheumatoid arthritis, her lively active demeanor disappears and she is forced to take to her bed. After Mama begins getting her injections, she is provided with some relief, and Ned is once again able to enjoy his mother as being an active participant in his life.
