What do the armbands represent in the novel, Once?

The armbands represent racism, and the different armbands indicate if the wearer is a Nazi or a Jew. The Jews are forced to wear their armbands to identify them as part of an inferior race as designated by Hitler. These Jews are identified so they can be tortured and killed.
