On the Rooftop
What is the symbolism of the rooftop in the novel, On the Rooftop?
.
.
The rooftop where Ruth, Esther, and Chloe practice their singing is symbolic of hope. The rooftop is physically positioned above the rest of the other Fillmore homes and buildings. It is therefore situated in a figuratively transcendent location. The rooftop helps the girls channel the hope they derive from singing together, especially as young women.
