On the Morning of Christ's Nativity
How is Mary described in Milton's poem, On the Morning of Christ’s Nativity?
.
.
Mary is described using contradictory terms that serve to highlight her ambiguous role as the human mother of god. She is at once a "Virgin" and a "mother," both "wedded" and a "maid," impossibilities in terms (3). Yet she embodies all these contradictions. Furthermore, at the very end of the poem, we are given a strikingly human image of Mary holding her infant son in her arms as he falls asleep. The poet thus closes by reminding us that the holy family is also a family just like any other.
