In Chapter Five, Jay tells Bri she has lost her job because there were riots in their city some months earlier when a young, unarmed black man was killed by police that damaged the church where Jay worked, forcing the daycare there to close. In order to try to save money in the budget, the church let some employees go, including Jay, who worked there as a secretary.
