The Romans were instrumental in developing the food flavors we use today. Wheat bread was a staple and large amounts were imported from Africa and other parts of the Empire. Rome also used huge amounts of honey in sweeter dishes, as well as offerings to the Gods. Honey was also used to preserve fruits, showing the world a new form of food preservation.
Mustard was developed as a condiment during Roman times, and they used lettuce and fruits as both appetizers as well as desserts. While their methods were simplified, their abilities to combine foods led others to devise new and exotic recipes that are enjoyed around the world.
