On Distant Ground
How does Fleming's wife respond to the news that he may have fathered a child in Vietnam in the novel, On Distant Ground?
.
.
Fleming's wife is hurt when he discloses his wartime affair with Suong, but she remains the supportive wife who appreciates David's commitment to fatherhood which contrasts with their memories of their own fathers: "Do you think we'd be as close to each other as we are if we didn't both have such hateful fathers?" The past can be put behind them, and the prospect of another woman's son coming into the family is not raised as a possible cause of conflict.
