What metaphors are used in On Becoming a Novelist by John Gardner?

Gardner does not employ metaphor in the text. He does, however, note that Dylan Thomas' "fundamental impulse is to capture real life, "but that his metaphors and "slam-cram poetry" overwhelm his characters.
