In the novel, Olive's Ocean, the main character Martha struggles with the typical coming of age angst. Among the largest of her worries and struggles is wanting to be a writer and thinking that no one will support it. She finds a confidant and supporter in her grandmother, whom she calls Godbee. Godbee is eccentric and adores Martha. Olive is a girl that Martha hardly knew, who also lived by the ocean. When Olive is killed by a car while she was riding her bike, a page of her diary is sent to Martha, who learns that Olive admired her and wanted to be her friend. Olive also wanted to be a writer when she grew up. Jimmy....not such a nice guy. He films he and Martha kissing stating that it was for a movie he was making and needed a love scene. In reality, he kissed her on a dare and filmed it to show all of his friends.
