Olga's mother writes her when she learns that Olga has been accepted to an Ivy League college in 1995. She says that the institution is bourgeois and is no place for Olga. They will not teach her about her people's history and they see no value in their culture. Her classmates will not be the children of factory workers, housekeepers, or teachers; they will be the children of bankers and politicians. She says that Olga's acceptance to the school is just a gesture to show that they accept all races. Olga's mother also tells her that she should not go into debt and waste her money on that type of education.
