Will's mother, Lady Marsden, was born into money, and made her debut in Charleston in 1840. Lady Marsden was educated at St. Cecilia's Christian Finishing School in Richmond and lived in a seventy room house on the plantation called The Lilacs. She suffered severe burns when Sherman's troops burned The Lilacs.
