Why did Slim suggest that Curley should say he got his hand caught in a machine, rather than telling others that Lennie attacked him?

Slim doesn't want Lennie and George to get "canned" or fired. Thus, he strongly suggests to Curley that he say that he got his hand caught in a machine or he (Slim) will tell everybody what really happened.
