William Carey from Of Human Bondage is the Uncle that Philip comes to live with. William is a pastor and believes that Philip should follow in his footsteps and become a preacher as well. Philip rejects this notion and decides to become a doctor. William does not support this and does not think it an occupation for a gentleman. Later, when Philip's money runs out and he can't continue medical school, he asks William for help. It doesn't come until many years later when William dies and leaves his estate to Philip.
