Mildred Rogers Miller from Of Human Bondage is a waitress at a small tea shop where the older Philip goes. She is rude and unattractive, which makes him want her all the more. She finally agrees to go out with him, but is constantly telling him that she is not interested in him romantically. In Philip's mind, however, he sees romance in every little gesture or glance she gives him. It totally devastates him when she announces after a few months that she is marrying someone else.
