Ode: Intimations of Immortality From Recollections of Early Childhood
How is the child referred to over the course of the poem, Ode: Intimations of Immortality From Recollections of Early Childhood?
.
.
Throughout the various stanzas, the speaker gives the child many different names and titles. Early on he is referred to as “thou Child of Joy” and “happy/Shepherd-boy” (34, 36). Later the speaker calls him a “little Actor,” “best Philosopher,” “Mighty Prophet,” and “Seer blest” (103, 111, 115). The child is celebrated for their ability to observe and experience the world around them with an unparalleled sense of wonder and enjoyment. The speaker envies this quality in the child, as it is something they feel they have lost in their adulthood.
