A few days later, the humans bring Odder a pup and put him in the rooftop pool with her. Odder swims away because she knows she is not fit to be a mother. She ignores the pup for several days. Kairi asks Odder why she will not take the pup. Odder says she does not know how to be a mother. Kairi reminds her that she knows how to play.
A few days later, Odder watches as the pup gets tangled in seaweed and acts afraid of diving. Odder gets frustrated that the pup does not know how to swim, dives down, and scoops her up onto her belly to cuddle her. She says she will teach the pup everything, but, most important, she will teach the pup to play.
In “Coda: Six Months Later,” the narrator tells an otter how to say goodbye to another otter, implying that Odder and Kairi were able to teach their pups how to return to the sea.
