Why did Marie's father not like Frank, and what did he do to get her to stop seeing Frank?

Albert Tovesky, Marie's father, could not stand Frank because he abandoned his mother. When Marie refused to stop seeing him, he sent her to convent school in St. Louis hoping that the distance would end the courtship.
