What is the significance of Claude referring to Trudy as his "little mouse" in the novel, Nutshell?

Throughout the novel, Claude refers to Trudy as his "little mouse." She is the mouse in more ways than one. Both sexually, as Claude is probably intending, but also she is a mouse in a trap, as she cannot escape the murder plot without going to prison.
