Symbolism of Ellen's necklace in Number the Stars by Lois Lowry

Ellen's necklace depicts the Star of David and is a symbol of her Jewish heritage. It was a gift from her father, which she never took off. Removing the necklace also symbolized the necessity to hide this symbol of the Jewish religion in order to survive. Note, hiding the symbol does not mean forgetting.
