Kirsti is described as charming and vivacious. Her innocence and sense of right and wrong are so intact that she uses the naive courage of youth to confront the German soldiers when they mistreat her or others. Kirsti is unaware of the specific knowledge the adults in the story are privy to. She is innocent of the knowledge that the Nazis aren't interested in right, wrong, or showing compassion. Her innocence, however, shines brilliantly against the backdrop of the German occupation, and her character stands as a poignant symbol of what the Danish Resistance is trying to protect. By protecting her from the more unpleasant truths of the war, her parents have given her the gift of peace of mind. The fact that they are successful throughout most of the book in protecting their daughter's innocence is surely a gift to her parents as well, and a hopeful sign that normal life is still possible, even under the threats present during the Nazi occupation.
