What causes the twins to burst into flames in Chapter Six?

The twins burst into flames in Chapter Six when Lillian makes them do some school work. Because their mother never made them go to school, the twins are academically behind. When Bessie realizes the full extent of her ignorance, she bursts into flames, and Roland quickly follows suit.
