The students, looking for purpose in life, go to the abandoned sawmill to build what they refer to as the heap of meaning. The heap of meaning serves as a symbol of the desperation the students feel in trying to prove to Pierre Anthon that things have meaning in and of themselves because they cannot bear to imagine that he might be right.
