Why do the people leave small offerings around the tree in the novel, Notes From the Burning Age?

When Ven, Vae, and Yue are in the forest in the opening chapter, they see small items around a tree which are symbols of the prayers and thanks of the people. The practice of leaving small offerings at specific places is an integral part of the main religion of these people.
