How many people lived in the location now referred to as the Zone prior to the nuclear disaster?

At the time of O'Connell's writing, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster was 31 years in the past. At the time when the nuclear power plant experienced a catastrophic meltdown, there were 120,000 Soviet citizens living within the boundaries of what is now known as the Zone.
