Why do Tempy and her husband leave the Baptist church?

They quit the black Baptist church they went to and started going to the white Episcopalian church where "better" people go. They seem to believe, like many middle class blacks, that they need to avoid interaction with lower-class blacks if they are to be approved by white people and have prosperous lives.
