Why does Travis discard the scarves his mother bought him in the novel, Noggin?

Although he initially resists his mother's idea, Travis uses the scarves for a while to deflect what he experiences as a lot of unwelcome attention. Eventually, he discards them completely as concealing an identity that he has to learn to accept and live with.
