The author provides considerable commentary about the portal/internet throughout the novel, focusing in particular on the ways in which social media is a hindrance to genuine communication and empathy. Online, people often overshare personal information that the protagonist feels voyeuristic about observing. The protagonist is also vaguely uncomfortable about the phenomenon of public shaming online, in which a group of people collectively harass someone for an infraction, be it large or small—"Sometimes the subject was a war criminal, but other times it was someone who made a heinous substitution in guacamole" (9). There is little room for subtlety or nuance on the portal.
