Why does Sergio live with his grandmother?

Sergio has vague memories of his mother. He knows that they were living together in a shelter in Albany. Then his mother was found dead. Later Sergio was picked up on Route 32 in downtown Albany and taken to the hospital. They tracked down his grandmother who had been looking for her daughter for three and a half years. Since his mother was dead, he went to live with his grandmother.
