The jar of "bad medicine" that David finds underneath the house holds cultural significance that causes Frick to cleanse and bless the house in an attempt to keep the family safe. It also, however, symbolizes the habit that Frick and Mom have of blaming David for the negative circumstances that befall them despite the fact that he is largely blameless in his actions. That David finds the jar bears heavy significance as the story progresses and Mom and Frick are more and more apt to blame David for things that are really their faults, or the fault of circumstance.
