Why do Dr. and Mrs. O'Shea have no children or grandchildren?

Dr. and Mrs. O'Shea do not have any living children or grandchildren. Their son and his wife died of typhoid when the O'Shea's grandson was a baby. Their grandson enlisted in the war and died.
