On the first walk ConaLee takes with her mother, Nurse Blevins, and Mrs. Kasinski, she see a man near an open wagon with his horse roped to a tree. He is breaking ground with a shovel and flinging dirt to the side. ConaLee wonders who the man is. Nurse Blevins tells her is the gravedigger for the asylum graveyard. He is digging graves.
