What happens during the carriage ride ConaLee takes with her mother and Dr. Story?

ConaLee's mother invites her for a carriage ride with her and Dr. Story. The Night Watch drives the carriage. Weed sneaks onto the back running board and hitches a ride. As ConaLee is conversing with her mother and Dr. Story, the carriage brakes sharply and skids along the road. A black bear and her three cubs are in front of them. The Night Watch tells them to be quiet. ConaLee signals for Weed and pulls him inside the carriage. They wait quietly until the bears move away.
