In Wiesel's case the use of the word 'last' is in reference to several things. His 'last' view of his father was an ugly and violent one, though at that point Elie was so desensitized and brutalized that he doesn't react immediately. Also, there is the 'last' train ride. There are a lot of 'lasts' and the author is more than likely indicating that most of this would have a 'lasting' impact on him, and to impart to the reader to make this the 'last' time something like this is allowed to occur.
