When the Germans first inavde Sighet, they are peaceable, polite, and respectful of the Jews, and ther officers live in private homes. Things change quickly, however, as they close the synagogues, detain the Jewish leaders, and seize their valuables. Rules are established, as the Jews are forced to wear yellow cloths that are symbolic of the Star of David. Soon after, Jews are banned from restaurants, cafes, trains, and synagogues. Curfews are also implemented.

By the end of the first chapters the Jews have been moved into two ghettos. Belongings are restricted and valuables are confiscated. Little by little, groups of Jews are deported. The Jews believe they are being taken to Hungarian brick factories..... they are mistaken.
