Is it tragic or innocence that causes the Jews to believe that Hitler didn't really mean to kill them all?

In my opinion, it is innocence that leads the Jews to believe they will be safe from Hitler. Many people left before the gathering began, others tried, and still others discussed leaving with their families. Unfortunately, many also could not envision the evil that would bring about their deaths. But how could they?
