What happened in the beginning?

In the opening of the novel, New Moon, Bella is having a nightmare. She is dreaming of her grandmother, and of Edward, her boyfriend. She wakes up from her nightmare when she realizes the old woman in the mirror isn't her grandmother at all...... it's her.
