What happened to Colonel Willis Corto?

Willis Corto, known to Case and Molly as Armitage, was a Colonel in the United States military. He was chosen to participate in a doomed operation known as Screaming Fist, in which commandos accompanied by a console cowboy would infiltrate Russian computer systems. Unknown to them, there were EMP defenses in place to shoot down the gilders and bring the operation to an end. Afterward, Corto was persuaded to testify and played an ironically instrumental part in saving the careers of military officers who had suppressed the knowledge about the Russian defenses in the first place.
