Hugh Wentworth is a famous white writer, who spends a great deal of his time in Harlem. He is good friends with the Redfields, especially Irene. Hugh doesn't approve of Clare partly because he suspects that she is passing. Irene believes that Hugh dislikes Clare because he thinks that Brian and Clare are having an affair.
