Why does Rukmani's mother not approve of her learning to read and write?

Rukmani's mother does not understand why she needs to read and write. Her mother cannot read or write, but can cook, care for her family, and keep a clean house. Therefore, since she can successfully do what a woman is expected to do, she feels that learning to read or write isn't necessary for a girl.
