The book explores the theme of religion, God and the Indian practices that were traditional during this time. At every turning, whether for good or bad, Rukmani and Nathan would take an offering out of what little they had to the feet of their Gods and Goddesses. Rukmani also makes reference to her prayers and their thankfulness towards God when things go well, and their anger, at times, when things go bad.
