In Chapter 14, why does Rukmani give Kunthi what she has demanded?

Rukmani gives Kunthi the rice because Kunthi threatens to tell Nathan that Rukmani has been unfaithful to him. Even though Rukmani never has been unfaithful, she fears how Nathan will react and gives in to Kunthi's blackmail.
