• Failing to note the danger presented by the weather, Eric almost kills himself and his horse during a sudden late winter storm.

• Eric's attempt to rescue someone who is committing suicide. Although Eric's rescue attempt is successful in the sense that he brings the person ashore, his efforts are too late to save the young man's life.

• Eric realizes his own mortality when his beloved ninety-two-year-old grandfather dies from a heart attack.
