How does the author use foreshadowing in Narcissus and Goldmund?

In Chapter One, we are introduced to Abbot Daniel and Brother Narcissus, both highly spiritual men. They represent two manifestations of spirituality, in that one man is pure and simple, while the other is cerebral. This representation foreshadows another dichotomy soon to be introduced as the book's main focus, setting the intellectual approach of Narcissus against the sensual life of Goldmund.
