Why does O'Connor think some people pretend to be unaffected by the peacocks?

O'Connor believes that even people who are enchanted by peacocks' tails will act unmoved. She thinks they act this way because they feel that the peacock has formed an unfavorable opinion of them. Instead of being met by a barking dog, visitors find themselves being investigated by peafowl.
