Why does O'Connor advise that if an author is called a Southern writer he is best to rid himself of the title as soon as possible?

O'Connor feels that today's writer is more independent than writers in previous generations were. Additionally, she feels that labeling oneself a Southern writer is dangerous because every piece will be judged by the Southern lifestyle.
